When Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics came out with their Lip Tar, I was SO excited. Upon trying them… I was disappointed because they left my (already dry) lips feeling and looking super duper dry.
To make matters worse, the Lip Tars have such great staining and staying power, I couldn’t get them off! I felt like I had “tar” on my lips and I couldn’t get that dry and sticky feeling off. The original Lip Tar formula just didn’t work for me.
Imagine my delight when OCC announced the launch of Lip Tar: Stained Gloss (launching May 23, 2013). I was hopeful, but I still had some reservations. Could OCC offer the bold pigmented colors with the same staining power in a glossy formula?!?
I’m happy to share that they’ve done it! They’ve figured out a way to offer the super pigmented Lip Tar formula in a glossy (non drying) finish, all while maintaining the staining power. Woot Woot!
Stained Gloss launches May 23, 2013.
(Lip Tar Stained Gloss, $18 for .33 fl oz available at Sephora)
“Stained Gloss is an exciting new texture option from the LIP TAR range, Stained Gloss combines the pigment potency of Lip Tar with a casual glossy finish that’s ready-to-wear from its first slick application to the high impact stain it leaves behind. Lip Tar: Stained Gloss can be worn alone or layered over your favorite existing shades for added depth, dimension and a glossy finish that lasts!”
OCC’s Lip Tar and Lip Tar Stained Gloss are very OPAQUE and very PIGMENTED. Unlike other glosses, you really can’t apply this gloss sheer even if you tried. They’re just too pigmented. You have to commit 100% to the colors because once you apply… it’s there to stay.
I wiped off the swatches with a paper town literally 1 minute after swatching and my arm was STAINED!
Here are the 6 pigmented vivid shades again.
Colors: Overall, the colors are bright and bold. These are not for the faint of heart. When you wear these, you will make a statement! 🙂 If you’re like me… you’re probably thinking that some of the colors are too crazy (yes, I’m referring to the yellow). I initially thought the yellow would be useless, but after some playing around, I actually like the color! Voyeur (yellow) and Androgyne (orange) are great colors to mix in with the other shades. You can tone down the boldness of the other colors by mixing them in! Also, it’s great as a base color under other lip glosses (non OCC) because it’ll slightly change the shade!
Consistency: I’d have to describe it as a lightweight liquid gel. It’s a great consistency and even with a thin application, you get a ton of color payoff. Never sticky or heavy. Really pleased with the consistency, especially after my experience with the original Lip Tar.
Scent: All Lip Tars have a pleasant peppermint scent. For those of you who don’t like plumping… no worries. This product does not plump. Just provides the perfect dose of peppermint.
Wear: After 2 hours and a full meal, the glossiness was gone but the stain was still there! Even after several hours, my lips didn’t look bare. They still had the stain color, just not the shine of the gloss.
Packaging: The little brush (without a cap and not retractable) and a tube of Lip Tar Stained Gloss comes in a little plastic pouch. This is one aspect I wish I could change. This product is not very travel or purse friendly. I wish one of two things would change: 1) I wish the brush was retractable. This is important because any leftover Lip Tar on the brush will stain anything it comes into contact with. ~OR~ 2) I wish it had a wand applicator so a brush wasn’t necessary.
100% Vegan and Cruelty Free: LOVE this. It’s great to know that OCC is completely vegan and cruelty free. 🙂 No animals were hurt, so we can look and feel great!
Final Thoughts: If you’ve never ‘t tried OCC’s Lip Tar, I highly suggest Lip Tar Stained Gloss. It’s a great non drying, boldly pigmented lip stain. Even if you’ve tried the original formula and weren’t impressed, Stained Gloss feels completely different from the original Lip Tar formula so you may love this formula. My dry lips felt completely comfortable. None of the dryness, patchiness, and/or dry-stickiness I experienced with the original formula.
Two thumbs up!
